A 2/2 creature is easily removed, but you can pump mana to make it bigger, or youre in black and have no shortage of ways to recur it
But just like Karplusan Yeti above, I think this is simply a product of early MTG where some of the card artwork don't quite have the main creature it's supposed to be depicting in the main focus
